Preregistration is now open for the 2017 Hibiscus Rodders Beach Festival held at Orewa on January 27, 28, and 29 — and car owners who preregister are in with an extra chance to win a six-night trip for two to Los Angeles.

The beach festival had its origins as a one-day show in January 2010, and quickly grew to a three-day event, attracting hundreds of classic vehicles and hot rods from throughout the North Island each Auckland Anniversary Weekend.

From the seven events held since the inaugural festival, the club has raised over $100,000 for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, with the 2016 running raising an impressive $35,000 alone, thanks to an estimated crowd of 50,000 people over the three days.

“We were delighted with the whole event,” said show co-ordinator Sharon Morris. “We had car entrants travel from as far away as Whangarei, New Plymouth, Gisborne, and Te Awamutu, and we had fabulous feedback with everyone telling us they had a great time. It’s just getting bigger and better each year.

“It’s great to promote hot rodding, great for our community, and hopefully helps all the local businesses. And most of all, it raises fantastic funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to help save lives.”

The show is open to pre-1975 cars, or any of American origin, and car numbers are limited to 500 on any given day to ensure the event runs smoothly.

The 2017 event includes hot rods in the park on Friday evening, followed by a drive-in movie, then the main beach festival event at the Orewa Reserve on Saturday, plus Saturday evening events. On Sunday, a show ’n’ shine on Orewa’s main street will be followed by a cruise, lunch, and entertainment.

“We’ve got some fantastic sponsors, including Air Tahiti Nui and House of Travel, who have once again given us a trip prize,” said Sharon. “Some lucky person will win a USA getaway, with six nights’ accommodation in Los Angeles and four days’ hire of a Mustang convertible.”

All entrants will get an entry in the trip-prize draw with their goodie bag at the gate, but car owners pre-registering before January 15 will automatically get an extra entry with their festival pack and programme. Passengers and members of the public can also buy programmes at the event to enter the prize draw.

Sharon also informs us that there will be plenty of other great prizes up for grabs, and lots of entertainment and contests, including the Ms V8 Chick contest for female car owners, and the popular Miss Hibiscus Vintage competition, which debuted at this year’s Hibiscus Rodders Beach Festival.
