The concept of the 24 Hours of LeMons is pretty simple. Get a bunch of mates together, buy a shitbox, and race it around for 24 hours, hoping it’ll last the distance.
That’s exactly what happened at Waikato’s Hampton Downs Motorsport Park over the weekend of September 17–18, and while teams were doing it for a laugh, it was all for a great cause, with proceeds from the event going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Vehicles range from those you’d expect, like Corollas and the likes, through to an HQ Holden and everything in-between.
Drivers were equally as varied, many with little or no track time, right through to the drivers of that very Holden HQ, which included drift superstar ‘Fanga’ Dan Woolhouse and speedway legend Michael Pickens.
Pros they may be, yet the wet weather certainly helped level the playing field, and the HQ was spotted on the grass on more than one occasion …
A team known as ‘Giant Heavy Lemons’ managed to take the win in their Ford Telstar, and deservedly so, as they also posted the quickest lap time of the whole event.
Interestingly, even after so long on the track, there were only a handful of DNFs, although, admittedly, some cars finished well down in the number of laps completed.
But winning isn’t really what the 24 Hours of LeMons is about. It’s about having fun, and there was plenty of that.
