The annual Winternationals is the biggest drag racing event in Australia, full-stop. Held on Australia’s Queen’s Birthday weekend at Willowbank Raceway, the event covers a four-day qualifying and race format. Marking the 50th running of the Winternationals in Australia, this year — with a massive 550 cars and bikes lined up — looked to make the milestone meeting the best ever, except that rain decided to stop play early.

While the first three days of the event saw a combination of sunny and cloudy weather, racing on both Friday and Saturday nights came to a sudden end with rain appearing. In fact, Saturday night’s very last pass between the top fuel cars of Terry Sainty and American Larry Dixon saw the dragsters about to stage when word came that it had started to rain at that end of the track. Unfortunately, the Sunday eliminations were washed out completely.
