While Hollywood conjures up thoughts of iconic cars from our favourite high-speed action movies, perhaps one of the least memorable would have to be the Chevrolet Suburban. However, that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been there. In fact, various incarnations have — a lot more than you’d think. Chev says that its largest SUV has been featured in film since 1952, racking up a total of 1750 appearances.
The Suburban’s generous amount of screen time should come as no surprise, though. In those earlier years, the vehicle was a workhorse and could be spotted in the background of almost any kind of streetscape. Nowadays, Suburbans are the gold standard for American VIPs rolling up in a scene. Hell, you see anything with a president in it, and the motorcade will be 10 deep in the things. In Hollywood, the Chevrolet Suburban projects institutional power better than any other vehicle, and film-makers know it.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honoured the Suburban’s “cinematic excellence and wide variety of role” on 5 December, making it the first vehicle to receive a star on the Walk of Fame.
